So, today I’m sitting here thinking about my flute playing style. Someone made the offhand comment that I sound like some sort of snake charmer when I play. But, it doesn’t bother me the opinions, because most of the fun of music is the imperfections, and the learning, and screwing up right and left. The journey. I’m having so much fun with this, that I dream about it while I’m at the coffee shop – henceforth known as the Hotel. And, most people think that the coffee shop is the end of the rainbow for things. Well at least the ones I’ve talked with. But, that’s only about 9 people… 🙂
I’m working on a story right now that I have entitled: The Special Wind Children. I often wonder to myself what would happen, if children one day got control of the wind around me. And, how I would speak with them in response for blowing my coffee and water right off the table, while my cigarettes were playfully left untouched. Hm.
Back to the flute for a moment. The flute, seems to be a simple instrument. Five or six holes to make notes, and I always thought it was kind of limited in terms of what it could do. But, I’m learning fast that this is untrue. I’m not going to give away any secrets here, but there’s a LOT to this instrument. And, as with any instrument, there is a story, a history, and a great respect that goes along with it. In my opinion only, a person really needs to learn EVERYTHING about what they are playing to truly excel in the instrument and music they have chosen to express themselves.
It was like this for me with Capoeira too. I wanted to learn how to fight. Not learn musical instruments and language. My Professor had to throw me a lot of bones with fighting moves, before I finally understood to have great respect for the art and every part of it. And, honestly it took years. But, now I have the balance, and am a better practitioner in terms of all that. And, it is a very great feeling to know I’m doing it right!

Thank you for reading today, and I hope everyone is doing well out there this Friday! Please feel free to leave comments in the box below.
