I decided early on this morning that today, I just cannot be bothered with anything. I decided that this Wednesday, I’m pulling a Huck Finn and going to the park with a frisbee to just have FUN. I’m not talking to anyone on my phone, covered my bases for the most part and its all just going to have to wait until tomorrow. This idea is so crazy, that it just might work.
I used to play a lot of Frisbee Golf when I was a kid. A friend back then designed a street golf course, and we would grab shorts and sandals, something to drink and our frisbees and play a short 48 holes on the course. We got so well known in the neighborhood for this, that nobody minded frisbees bouncing off of houses or the police station, the occasional city bus driving by, or Danger Alley with a particularly unfriendly dog that dwelled there.
This was a lot more than just a street golf course though. Nothing being what it seems, this was a place to take new friends and dates during the day, after bar time, during the winter and during the spring and summer too. To play music, be young and just have FUN. Problems that could not be solved by conventional means, with all respect to Keith Richards, were solved in short order out here in the wilderness golf course – usually only took about 18 holes and all was right in the world. For particularly tough cases, we went to George Webbs all night restaurant for during the day late night eats, and a couple Roman Candle wars later, all was right in the world.
My favorite frisbee golf course is in Boulder, Colorado. It is called High Point and is high up in the mountains. I have never seen a more beautiful course out in the wilderness with the Aspen trees yellow leaves, and having a great hike all afternoon long. The tree stump holes, and just being out there in nature breathing it all in and contemplating everything that ever was with a couple fellow golfers and little competition and a couple drinks to boot.
Sorry, but I’m vacation today. I’m painting more pretty pictures than a renaissance painter in terms of ideas and places and memories this afternoon! And at age 51, I find that I’m not bad at it – I love being this age! A parting random thought: I’m remembering watching the movie Star Wars in the theater back in college and two Star Destroyers steered too close to each other. A friend in the movie theater remarked – Hey! You keyed my Star Destroyer! What I took away from that comment, is that its important not to fly too close to the sun. 🙂
Thank you for reading today, everyone. I hope you are having a fantastic day out there wherever you may be, and as always, please feel free to leave a comment in the box below!
