This idea could be a touch controversial. But, its not THAT far off, and its a great hook for this blog today! 🙂 I’m over here talking cell phones and road maps. I need a hair cut VERY badly, and working that into the conversation right after I finish this blog.

Today, I’m thinking about tin cups and string connecting them, and having a good conversation. After two months without a phone, I am back to the land of the living communication-wise. I gave up television when I was 27, and in my opinion, this was harder. I had FOUR cell phones break over the last couple months while I was sick, and just decided it was not worth the expense. People rioted. But, while there was damage from all the communication balls dropped during that time period, thankfully it was fixable.

I’m sitting here thinking about how it all started with cell phones. Does anyone remember the old Motorola phones that were in a carrying case with a big fat antenna that were the hot thing before cell phones became available to everyone? These were reserved for cars mainly, and whoever had one was labeled a success. These numbers were NEVER given out., and were for emergencies and business use. When phones became more widespread and closer to their current form, numbers were given out all over the place, and as for use? I remember being incredulous when my cousins would call each other from the next room asking each other to bring a shirt they forgot downstairs…and wondered just WHY we all needed cell phones so much. Hm.

My first cell phone was a Palm Treo. I was 30 years old and buying my first cell phone… My family threatened to buy me a Firefly if I didn’t get this phone and get with the times. A Firefly is a little plastic phone that looks like the insect in question, and it has four buttons that contain four programmable numbers. I have always been a Cro-Magnon when it comes to technology, but that was kind of a slap!

Which leads me to pay phones and the collect call. A quick observation: are there any out there anymore? Not where I live! I don’t know many that don’t have a cell phone these days, and if you get into trouble, bystanders are always willing to make the call on your behalf. And, who still carries much loose pocket change in an age of plastic cards?

The other thing I was thinking about this afternoon is hard copy maps. Gas stations around here don’t seem to have road maps anymore. I know by this point in our lives we all know how to get where we are going, but I still cannot figure out why people are no longer carrying these….

On a final note, I’m wearing my Hotel California shirt today, and people are acting funny. In some strange way, I think its the shirt. It HAS to be. That or space aliens….
