Today, I’m thinking about the importance of getting it right the first time, and going your own way.

I don’t know about all of you, but most people here go through university as a matter of course.  We cannot get a good job without it in this country these days.  For me, I did terribly in school.  I was a C student.  I went through school and university because I was supposed to.  Not because I necessarily wanted to, or was ready for it.  And, it showed.

But, as I justified this in later years, I did my best learning as soon as I graduated.  I wrote awhile back about getting a master’s degree in people and life by bartending, and a PhD in people and life by driving a cab.  I myself, have not done this, but, know a few people who have and they agreed this is not far wrong.  Just thoughts, disjointed right now.

One of the things that gets me all the time, is the idea of “getting it right the first time.”  In my opinion only, NOBODY gets it right the first time.  My educational experience, I obviously did not get right.  But, after, I learned fast, and used everything I did supposedly not absorb in addition to this to go on to good things and be just fine.  Better than fine, actually.

I meet a lot of people who feel very lost.  Kids especially.  They are in the system, because it’s just what is supposed to be done.  Many are excited, and are fine.  But, there’s a few, like those that were in my platoon when I was a Platoon Sergeant, that were not finding their way very easily at all.  They were from “get it right the first time” families.

Once I got it right the second time, I spent years, trying to fit into a system that I didn’t fit.  I thought there was something wrong with me a lot back then.  But, one day, I decided it was ridiculous.  I would cut from the program.  And, go do my own thing.  Roll the dice, and to hell with the consequences, I was tired of being kept down, and I went on.  And, it worked.  I was free.  And, I was outdoing, many.  And, happy at last.

A final thought in this stream of consciousness blog, is that as a get it right the second time individual, I remember this: Wandering for months.  Days would pass and all I could think to do, was jump in my car and just drive.  I spent most of my time, talking into a tape recorder.  And, explaining to the tape, that it was about time for the space aliens to land and collect me, and take me to my kind.  And, one day, they did – but, that’s a different story… 🙂

Hope all the readers are having a fantastic day out there, wherever you may be. As always, please feel free to leave comments in the box below!
