Tonight, I’m thinking about hourglasses. I think, they are where you find them.

I have an hourglass of a kind where I currently live – and it’s three locations. I’m sitting at the top part right now – it’s all about beginnings…ideas and such waiting to happen. The next location, my residence, is the sand falling through the thin neck – constant state of motion and change and unpredictability…life itself. And, at the bottom, I have a remote offsite location where I sort through everything that happened from the top and middle, and take the sands I want to start all over again.

Over the years, I have seen a few locations that qualify as something like this. It just reminds me to keep looking at life a little differently… And, in following this train of thought, my sets of three hourglass example also applies to playing music today.

For me, I look at producing music in three ways. The first, is coming up with my own material for me. It’s new ideas, fresh experience and just is so much fun. The second, is making music that sounds and feels great and evokes great emotion for others. The third way is when I pick up my guitar and play music over and over again. This is meditation for me, helps me to zone out and center myself and really pick out the parts that I like, to go forward in different directions and ultimately start the process all over.   I guess I just found my second hourglass.

Finally, I’m thinking about the third hourglass idea to complete the previous two examples. For me, location is the top part, people are in the middle and art and its mediums are the resulting accumulated sand, to be started all over again at the beginning when it’s turned upside down again as new.  What I’m currently trying to think about this evening is duration for all this though. Because there are physical and non-physical hourglasses out there, I think – and I’m wondering just how long it takes for the sands to complete and be started over. Pondering the big questions tonight.

And yes, I love my nightly coffee brainstorms and thinking out loud, by the way…
